A dynamo driven by zonal jets at the upper surface: Applications to giant planets

چکیده
We present a dynamomechanism arising from the presence of barotropically unstable zonal jet currents in a rotating spherical shell. The shear instability of the zonal flow develops in the form of a global Rossby mode, whose azimuthal wavenumber depends on the width of the zonal jets. We obtain self-sustained magnetic fields at magnetic Reynolds numbers greater than 10. We show that the propagation of the Rossby waves is crucial for dynamo action. The amplitude of the axisymmetric poloidal magnetic field depends on the wavenumber of the Rossby mode, and hence on the width of the zonal jets. We discuss the plausibility of this dynamo mechanism for generating the magnetic field of the giant planets. Our results suggest a possible link between the topology of the magnetic field and the profile of the zonal winds observed at the surface of the giant planets. For narrow Jupiterlike jets, the poloidal magnetic field is dominated by an axial dipole whereas for wide Neptune-like jets, the axisymmetric poloidal field is weak.

The structure of zonal jets in shallow water turbulence on the sphere
The large-scale motions of planetary atmospheres and oceans, constrained by strong stable stratification and rapid rotation, are characterized in part by quasi-two dimensional turbulent motion and in part by coherent structures, such as vortices, zonal jets, and low-frequency waves. These motions are intimately linked and understanding their complex and multiscale interactions presents a comple...
متن کاملThe ubiquitous zonal jets in the atmospheres of giant planets and Earth’s oceans
[1] Recent eddy-permitting simulations of the North Pacific Ocean have revealed robust patterns of multiple zonal jets that visually resemble the zonal jets on giant planets. We argue that this resemblance is more than just visual because the energy spectrum of the oceanic jets obeys a power law that fits spectra of zonal flows on the outer planets. Remarkably, even the non-dimensional proporti...
متن کاملDynamo Models for Planets Other Than Earth
Observations from planetary spacecraft missions have demonstrated a spectrum of dynamo behaviour in planets. From currently active dynamos, to remanent crustal fields from past dynamo action, to no observed magnetization, the planets and moons in our solar system offer magnetic clues to their interior structure and evolution. Here we review numerical dynamo simulations for planets other than Ea...
متن کاملForced-Dissipative Shallow-Water Turbulence on the Sphere and the Atmospheric Circulation of the Giant Planets
Although possibly the simplest model for the atmospheres of the giant planets, the turbulent forceddissipative shallow-water system in spherical geometry has not, to date, been investigated; the present study aims to fill this gap. Unlike the freely decaying shallow-water system described by Cho and Polvani, equilibrium states in the forced-dissipative system are highly dependent on details of ...
متن کاملUniversal nÀ5 spectrum of zonal flows on giant planets
The energy spectra of the observed zonal flows on Jupiter and Saturn are shown to obey the scaling law EZ(n)5CZ(V/R) n in the range of total wave numbers n not affected by large scale friction ~here, V and R are the rotation rate and the radius of the planet, and CZ is an order-one constant!. These spectra broadly resemble their counterpart in recent simulations of turbulent flows on the surfac...
